12/2009 NEWS!!!   "Cited by Kirkus Reviews as one of the

BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR!"

"...A TRULY ORIGINAL WORK...A GREAT COMIC NOVEL"

- Kirkus Reviews

Side Effects recounts the medical misadventures of Simon Apple from an

eventful Midwestern youth through a series of events that have landed him on

Death Row for the capital (and capitalistic) crime of threatening a major

pharmaceutical conglomerate…not to mention the nation’s

unbalanced balance of trade!

Simon’s life has been one long wrestle with Miracle Cures, each of which has

caused increasingly bizarre consequences, requiring more, and still more, Miracle

Cures in an escalating spiral...those Wonder Drugs we hear about every night on

the eleven o’clock news.

On the day Simon prepares for his final exit, Regis Van Clay, the short-fused

CEO of Regis Pharmaceuticals, celebrates the profitable prospect of a Simonless

world. While Simon contemplates his trip to eternity, he must suffer a parade of

visitors--relatives, friends, enemies, lovers-- from the maze of his surreal past.

A rollicking ride that ranges from horrendous to hilarious, Side Effects is also a

coming-of-age novel whose hapless hero is caught in an existential pickle barrel

where biography itself is a collection of unintended consequences… a prescription

for a splendid read where RX marks the spot.  (Ask your doctor!)

CRITICAL PRAISE  FOR  JACOBS’  PREVIOUS WORKS

“Every page—every half-page—yields some sudden jolt of comic or lyric observation.”

- The Washington Post

“Jacobs’ bawdy romance demonstrates that enduring comedy springs from deep- seated  anxieties… Inspired.”

- Time Magazine

“Exceptional wit and wry insight…a skewed hybrid of Huxley and  Vonnegut...”

- Booklist (American Library Association)

“Stunningly inventive and charming fiction. [American Goliath is] arguably  this year’s best novel.”

- Kirkus Reviews

“Here is an author who sees life clearly and with humor…”

- Publishers Weekly

“Move over Philip Roth, Mel Brooks, Heironymus Bosch. At last we’ve got another original.”

- Philadelphia Inquirer
